Apart from the traditional steel crash barriers, there are the “more modern” bamboo crash barriers – Kooch Kavach (A sustainable protective guardrail for highways). The workmanship of the bamboo crash barriers complies with the common EU standard “EN 1317-2 – containment level H2” and is a good alternative to the standard crash barriers. Kooch Kavach improves the environmental aspect of the roads.
The Kooch Kavach is made from a new innovative composite material named Bahu-Balli. Which is also developed by our company. Bahu-Balli is made of Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) – treated and HDPE-coated bamboo poles. This composite material has a higher strength in terms of mechanical properties in comparison with normal bamboo and with steel (in some specific applications).
The Kooch Kavach elements have a high bending load carrying strength compared to conventional steel crash barrier elements. So the dynamic flexibility of the Kooch Kavach is also ensured in the event of an accident. The impact shock is absorbed and the vehicle is deflected from the barrier towards the road in the same way as the traditional steel crash barriers.
Creosote treatment by VPI protects the bamboo from any termite, borer, and insect infestation. HDPEcoating is highly resistant to heat, light, and water. As a result of all processes, the Kooch Kavach – Bamboo crash barrier is made weatherproof, thus requiring no further maintenance/care. Only selected matured bamboo species (with specific mechanical strengths) from India are used in the production of the Kooch Kavach.

Our guardrails are crash tested at NATRAX, Pithampur, Indore according to EN 1317. NATRAX is one of the state-of-the-art automotive testing and certification center under NATRiP, a flagship project of The Ministry of Heavy Industries, Govt of India.
Apart from the “conventional” railings, YAF offers Bahu-Balli Suraksha Kavach railings (bamboo-made railings), which are complete, fully engineered railing systems where every component (posts, horizontal members, and vertical members) has been specifically designed to optimise strength.
The bamboo railings with their VPI treated and HDPE coated bamboo poles stand for long service life. The attractive design integrates well into the natural environment.
It is lighter and equivalent in strength compared to conventional railings. This weight advantage means easy handling for fast installation, while the overall system delivers an attractive, robust, and cost-effective railings solution. Apart from the attractive appearance, the railings also offer increased protection and security for public places and for pedestrian and cycle paths.
We recommend this type of railing for highways and for urban areas with a high vehicle and pedestrian frequency, particularly for the protection of children.
These ideas and wishes of each customer are different, so we are happy to support you with personal consultation born of long-standing experience. Fillings with bamboo mats and fencing panels etc. are also possible.
Indian Railway has approved and issued an advisory for wide use of Bahu-Balli Suraksha Kavach fencings.
